A1 Bakery
This wonder of the north has been cooking up Lebanese goodness since 1992. A1 Bakery is a place for the whole community as they keep their price low, so everyone can enjoy their cheesy pies, pizzas, and platters. They do great Platters for two and serve coffee/tea in every which way. We can recommend the Kibbie Platter and grabbing an ice-cold Ayran out of the fridge. This is the place if you are looking for somewhere to celebrate something special or for a more chilled experience you could hit the garden out the back for a drink and a snack. Website | Instagram | 234 Johnston St, Fitzroy
CAPTAINO
Capitano is a dimly lit Italian-American diner from the founder of Bar Liberty and the wine list is just as long. We can recommend the Grandma Square Pie and the Tiramisu. This is some of the best pizza in our fine town so make sure you give it a try. Website | Instagram | Phone | 421 Rathdowne St, Carlton
Claypots
A visit to South Melbourne Market would be incomplete without having a Fish in Bread from Claypots on the corner of Cecil and York Street but there is more to Claypots than their delicious BBQ street food because the restaurant offers an amazing list of seafood delights as well. All set to nice music making Claypots a great place to relax and enjoy a drink too. Walk-ins only for small groups. Menu | Instagram | Corner of Cecil & York Street, South Melbourne
DOC Pizza
DOC Pizza is Italian simplicity at its best. This cozy restaurant takes no booking, so just roll up and ask for a table or take it away because there is plenty of nice spots to enjoy the thin, Naples-style pizza in Carlton. The wine and antipasti boards are divine so if you have the time you should sit in and unwind. Website | Instagram | 295 Drummond St, Carlton
Hector’s deli
Tucked away on a back street of Richmond you will find Hector’s Deli where they concentrate on improving the classic sandwiches we all know and love. All the ingredients are of the highest quality and everything is ethically sourced. The coffee also lives up to Melbourne's very high standards. hotel jesus
Set in the old Collingwood Post Office you will find some of Melbourne's best Mexican. Start things off with a Margarita or La Negra Michelada, then get stuck into the house-made tostadas, tacos, and ceviches. While there, be sure to check out the outstanding design work by James Brown from MASH Design in Adelaide. The interior is one of the coolest in the city. It features a central bar, hand-painted signage, some mighty fine tile work, and a beer can shrine just before you enter the baños - all creating some sense of your dream Mexican holiday. Huxtaburger
This is the original Huxtaburger and it really started something because now they have franchises all over Melbourne, Sydney, and WA, ay. It’s no wonder because their Californian In-and-Out style burger will have your mouth watering every time you think of them from here on out. Website | Instagram | 106 Smith St, Collingwood
K&H Hot Bread Bakery
KELSO'S SANDWICH SHOPPE
Kelso's are your sandwich specialises and their housemade pickles are something you have to try. All the coffee is from Supreme and here it's brewed just right. If it's your first time we recommended the Chop Cheese which comes with grass-fed beef or fried tofu. Menu | Instagram | Phone | 271 Johnston St, Abbotsford
Lambs
Lambs on Lygon Street are famous for their souvlakis and it is their rotated meat that is the true stand out here although there are set menus, mixed grills, and a nice breakfast menu if you would like to sit in. A great spot for a post-dinner bread and meat combo, if it's your first time - try the lamb souvlaki for $16. 100 Lygon St, Carlton
LEONARDS HOUSE OF LOVE
This American 70’s style bar is set up in a house just off Chapel Street, slinging cold beers, burgers, wine, load fries, cocktails, and fried chicken. The Bloody Mary, named the Proud Mary is a crowd-pleaser and you should give their Pickleback a crack while you are at it. It's easy to feel at home here, it is the type of place you could stay at all night long. Play pool in the back or sit on the front porch eating and drinking yourself silly. Website | Instagram | 3 Wilson St, South Yarra
LEONARDO'S PIZZA PALACE
On the south side of the River, they brought us Leonard’s House of Love and on the north side, they give us Leonardo’s Pizza Palace which serves up some of the best pizza in town. Originally, this place was Da Salvatore Pizza by the Metre, which opened in 1959. Leonardo’s has kept some of those OG Italo vibes but they have just jazzed it up a little. With DJs spinning tunes on the regular this place is great for a catch-up with M8 or a D8. Happy Hours: Monday to Friday / 5 - 7PM / $12 jugs of beers | Late night Happy Hours: Everynight / 10PM to close /$12 Negroni / $5 Peroni cans /$35 for 1L of Barbera. MILE END BAGELS
Owners Benjamin Vaughan and Michael Fee noticed a gap in the Melbourne food scene. For years we didn’t have a good bagel hook up but Mile End Bagels changed all that. Now offering around 15 different toppings for your New York-style bagel and coffee every way you could want it, Mile End makes for the perfect way to start your day. Website | Instagram | 14 Johnston St, Fitzroy
N.Lee Bakery
Right in amongst it on Smith Street, you will find N. Lee Bakery slinging Banh Mi’s for a fair price. You can expect to line up during lunch hour, but it is well worth the wait. You can sit out the front and eat but most take it and run. 220 Smith St, Collingwood
NICO'S SANDWICH DELI
Nico's Sandwich Deli has a sandwich to please everyone and they start slinging melts from 8AM every morning and then start whipping out fresh sandwiches from 10AM. The filter coffee always hits the spot and their merch is worth a look as they are often releasing limited runs tees and soccer tops. Menu | Instagram | 100 Kerr St, Fitzroy
PHUOC THANH
Phuoc Thanh sling some of the best Banh Mi on Victoria Street and if you want to beat the queue best to avoid the lunch hour because this place gets busy but it is well worth it. Can recommend the Crispy Pork with chili. 206 Victoria St, Richmond
RITA’S PIZZERIA
Three fellas started the burger show Bottle of Milk and Pizza Pizza down in Lorne. After much success da boyz took a punt on a place in Abbotsford and start Rita's Pizzeria with chef Daniel Spizzica formally from the Stokehouse in St. Kilda. Melburnians continuously bring up Rita's when debating the best pizza in the city and with gluten-free bases, salads, risotto, house-made pasta, beer on tap, and an excellent wine list what more could you want? FRANKIE'S TORTAS & TACOS
Frankie's Tortas & Tacos start off in 2019 slinging excellent Mexican food from a food truck on Smith Street but since then they have stepped things up with a licensed restaurant on Johnston Street across the road from Casa Iberica. Trang Bakery & Cafe
Trang’s has formed a cult-like following in Collingwood and for good reason because their Banh Mi's are something special. There are plenty of options on the menu including vegan options. We recommend the special pork roll or the crispy pork roll. Here you can choose between a white or wholemeal roll, which will be generously filled with ingredients. The Vietnam iced coffee is also a winner at Trang. 382 Smith St, Collingwood
To’s Bakery
Anyone from the west will vouch for To’s Bakery, opening at 6:30am and closing at 7:30pm this place has been keeping Melbournians fed for over a decade. To’s does do a bloody good Pork Banh Mi, but here we recommend something a little different it is called the Combination Buns which is a mix of mushrooms, Chinese sausage, and egg. 122 Hopkins St, Footscray
warkop
Warkop is slinging some super tasty sandwiches on the back streets of Richmond. The food has an Indonesian influence adding some unique flavours to the much-loved sandwich classics and the coffee is good too. Check out the Warkop Instagram for specials and collaborations.
